Senior Firmware Engineer

About Sempulse

Sempulse makes an FDA-cleared, non-invasive vital signs monitor called Halo that streams real-time patient data to first responders and clinicians. It’s validated by the U.S. Military, SOCOM, NATO, the Gates Foundation, and the Cleveland Clinic, among others, and it’s been selected for the U.S. Army’s Project Convergence. In December 2024, it saved its first life in the field.

We’re looking for a senior individual-contributor role to help build the firmware that runs on Halo itself.

About the Work

This is primarily a firmware (software) development role. You’ll contribute to the design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the low-level code that runs on Halo, spanning key subsystems like power management, sensor integration, storage, memory management, and user I/O that provide core support for the algorithms and application communication.

Engineers comfortable making light modifications to development boards to support prototyping and device updates will have an advantage here, occasionally serving as a supporting cast member to our manufacturing team when those needs come up.

Halo is an FDA-cleared device, which strongly influences our development and testing process. You’ll work directly with our quality team to make sure V&V and the right quality checkpoints are in place for all changes. We require rigorous testing and expect engineers to take responsibility for their work, including careful design, testing, and incorporating peer review from others.

What We’re Looking For

  • Professional experience building low-level firmware for battery-powered, Bluetooth-connected devices. Medical device experience is ideal but not required.
  • Genuine depth with the SDK of one of the major SoC providers (e.g., Nordic, Silicon Labs, or STMicroelectronics), ideally across multiple SDK generations, with a credible story for picking up a new platform quickly.
  • Experience owning board bring-up, toolchain migration, and porting existing drivers to new platforms, with specific examples you can speak to in detail.
  • Real, hands-on driver development experience: you’ve written drivers against a datasheet, not just called into ones someone else wrote.
  • A strong sense of software architecture for embedded systems: you make deliberate calls about module boundaries and abstraction layers, and can defend those calls as the firmware grows.
  • You’ve written and debugged real production C yourself (not just through an AI agent), and you understand what your code is doing well enough to describe it clearly, in detail, to others.
  • Experience or strong interest in utilizing Rust in embedded applications.
  • Confident making light changes to board layout to support prototyping and device updates: reading schematics, bench work, and component-level reasoning. Ideally you’ve studied electrical engineering or computer engineering, or have equivalent hands-on industry experience.
  • Experience applying test automation at multiple levels: unit, integration, end-to-end, and comfort contributing to hardware-in-the-loop automation, not just app-level testing.
  • A real sense of ownership over the code you write. Your instinct should be to leave it better than you found it, including code that you didn’t write. You know how to refactor with confidence.
  • Comfortable working within a regulated quality system: documentation, traceability, formal review. The strongest candidates will have hands-on experience with V&V and release processes in a regulated environment (medical device or similar).
  • Low ego, high confidence: you flag problems and propose better approaches without being asked.

How to Apply

Please submit a resume and brief cover letter explaining your experiences and how you’re uniquely qualified for this role.

Location and Travel

Our engineering team is fully distributed, and we hire talent from anywhere. Travel is minimal, with occasional trips for in-person working sessions, software demonstrations, or to support our manufacturing team when necessary. Candidates should expect periodic travel to Central Texas (Austin, San Antonio), California (San Diego), Pennsylvania, or Connecticut.

Note:  No offshore resources or hiring agents.
